Some orthodontic problems are better treated earlier in childhood by utilizing the jaw growth that takes place in younger children.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 or earlier if a problem is suspected. Although active treatment may not be necessary so soon, Dr. Harris and Dr. Steen may elect to monitor your child’s dental development to intercept problems as they occur.
Early “Phase I” treatment is sometimes beneficial for children between ages 6 and 10. Early treatments usually last 6 to 18 months with braces placed only on the permanent teeth that are present and whose positions are a problem.
Benefits of Early Treatment Include:
- influence of jaw growth in a positive manner
- harmonize width of the upper and lower dental arches to correct functional cross bites
- improve eruption patterns and positions of permanent teeth
- lower risk of trauma to protruded upper incisors
- correct harmful oral habits
- improve esthetics and self-esteem
- reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
- preserve or gain space for erupting teeth
- reduce the need for removal of permanent teeth
Early orthodontic screening can lead to simple, more effective treatment or, at the very least, greater peace of mind for the parents.
