Mac Steen, DDS
Dr. Steen spent his first 12 years living throughout the world as the second son of a career Air Force family. He attended Florida schools from 6th grade until he graduated from Melbourne High School in 1966. He then attended the University of Florida, where he graduated in 1970 with a degree in business management. While in Gainesville, he played football for the Gators and was elected Captain of the 1969, 9-1-1 Gator Bowl Championship Team. While at UF, Dr. Steen was selected All-State, All SEC and All American, and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers professional football team. Academically, he was elected to Florida Blue Key, ODK and the university's Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was inducted into the Gator Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dr. Steen attended Emory University College of Dentistry in Atlanta and was president of his class. He graduated in 1974, at which time he began four years of service in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Aviano Air Base in Italy, as a dentist.
In 1978, he returned to UF for a two-year program in orthodontics. In 1980, he established his office in DeLand, limited to the specialty of orthodontics. Dr. Steen is Board Certified, a distinction earned by only 25 percent of America’s orthodontists.
From 1988-1992, Dr. Steen held a volunteer position as an Associate Clinical Professor in UF’s Orthodontic program. In 1988, he received the Student’s Choice Teacher Recognition Award.
In DeLand, Dr. Steen is perpetually involved in many activities supporting education, youth athletics, club activities and the culture of our community. He is a member of the DeLand Rotary Club with special emphasis on international youth exchanges and has served on the Executive Board of the YMCA. He was twice president of the DeLand High School Bulldog Booster Club.
Dr. Steen and his wife, Kathy, have been married since 1971 and have two children, Rusty and Katie. His hobbies include Gator sports, tennis, golf, fishing, sailing and outdoor work in his yard and fernery.
Allison Harris, DMD
Born in Mobile, Alabama but raised in Panama City, Florida, Dr. Harris definitely considers herself a Florida girl. After graduating top of her class at Bay High School, Dr. Harris attended Auburn University for two years. Finishing her undergraduate education at the University of Florida, Dr. Harris graduated with highest honors and earned a degree in biological engineering. During college she was an active member of her sorority, involved in Student Government and a member of numerous honor societies.
After graduating from college, Dr. Harris stayed in Gainesville for an additional seven years! She attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry and graduated with honors as a dentist in 2007. She continued her involvement in Student Government throughout dental school, and she was involved with several community service projects, including Give Kids a Smile and Project Heal (a medical mission trip to Ecuador).
As much as Dr. Harris enjoyed dentistry, she knew what she really wanted to be was an orthodontist. She was fortunate to be selected as one of four orthodontics residents at the University of Florida. Dr. Harris completed an additional three years of training to learn how to create beautiful, healthy smiles! Orthodontics residency proved to be an educational yet enjoyable experience, and Dr. Harris was honored to serve as the chief resident.
After becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Harris, her husband, Adam, and their dog, Belle, moved to DeLand where Dr. Harris joined Dr. Steen in practice. Dr. Harris and Adam just had their first child, Hannah, and they are thrilled to be parents! Being involved in the DeLand community is very important to the Harris family, and they have enjoyed meeting all the wonderful families in the area. Dr. Harris enjoys traveling, boating, bicycling, college football and spending time with her family when she isn’t working.
